For the 2010 Next Wave Festival, Next Wave has invited notorious Melbourne-based performance collective The Black Lung Whaling Firm to undertake a two-week residency at the Arts House, Meat Market. During this residency The Black Lung will work behind closed doors to develop a brand new work. Every few days, however, the group will open its studio doors to the public, providing audiences with a snapshot of their work-in-progress. This ‘open studio’ format gives audiences a unique opportunity to witness the artistic process in motion, as the Black Lung’s project evolves over the course of the fortnight.

The content and character of these ‘open-studio’ events will be entirely determined by the artists themselves, and may include work-in-progress performances, installations, artist talks, screenings, dark musical interludes and more. The residency will offer audiences new insights into The Black Lung’s creative processes, at the same time that it will enable the artists to build a new audience for their work and explore exciting new ways of involving the public in their messy, performance-making practice.
